Gephyrocapsa muellerae

Gephyrocapsa muellerae Bréhéret 1978

Description: Intermediate size species of Gephyrocapsa. Coccoliths with bridge at low angle to long axis, central area rather small.

Remarks: A cold water species, dominates Gephyrocapsa assemblages at high laltitudes. In older literature on living nannoplankton G. muellerae is often refered to as G. caribbeanica.

Size: Coccospheres, 5 to 9 µm; coccoliths, 3 to 4 µm long.

Notes on occurrence information: 

Common from MIS7 to MIS1 (Holocene). Frequently dominates higher latitude assemblages in MIS4-6, then is replaced by Emiliania huxleyi.
