Mesozoic Nannofossils

Remarks:

The Mesozoic part of nannotax was created in March 2011 by uploading of a comprehensive, carefully checked, taxon list produced by Jackie Lees and Paul Bown. We have also added a large number of illustrations from Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy (Bown 1998) and some recent papers of Paul Bown. This inital data input was sponsored by GCS-SEPM, carried out by Lyndsey Doulgas and supervised by Jeremy Young.  Additional content will be added progressively by Paul Bown, Jackie Lees and co-workers.

Navigation: use the "Mesozoic" menu to navigate through the taxonomy click taxon names to see deta an click the "+" box to see subtaxa.

Information given: For most taxa you will see four panels;

  1. The main panel - giving the full citation of the taxon and the descritption and other data will be added here.
  2. Images - showing all images of the taxon in the nannotax system, these are derived from high quality refereed papers and so should be reliable.
  3. Google scholar - an automated listing of papers in which google scholar has found a mention of the taxon, this is not verified by us but often provides useful results.
  4. Yahoo images - again this is the result of an automated websearch so verified by us but it usually gives good quality good results.

Known problems: there are a couple of problems arising from how the species list was input to nannotax, these will be rectified as we edit the Mesozoic pages.

  1. Truncated citations - author names with accents caused problems on import, e.g "Calyculaceae Noël 1973" ended up being truncated to "Calyculaceae No"
  2. Multiple entries in the main panel for some genera (due to species being tagged with the genric name)
