Calciosolenia fossilis (Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954) Bown in Kennedy et al., 2000

Calciosolenia fossilis (Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954) Bown in Kennedy et al., 2000

Description: Elongate, narrow scapholiths. Morphologically comparable with the extant Calciosolenia brasiliensis (Lohmann 1919), but fossil specimens have tended to be classified as Calciosolenia (or Scapholithus) fossilis.

Remarks: The extant species show considerable varimorphism across their coccospheres and there is evidence of similar variability in the fossil forms, when found as collapsed coccospheres.

Calciosolenia murrayi

Calciosolenia murrayi Gran 1912

Description: Coccosphere dimorphic, broad, tapering rather abruptly at ends with only a few elongate liths. Terminal liths have one end extended into spine. Bars not very regular and often merge into continuous sheet. Liths 2-4 µm long, spines up to 25 µm, coccospheres up to 30 µm.

Calciosolenia

Calciosolenia Gran 1912 emend. Young et al. 2003

Description: Coccosphere with rhombic muroliths with central area floored by transverse laths (scapholiths); monomorphic or dimorphic.

Remarks:

Original description:

Calciosolenia genus 130024.jpg

Csol203-05 (471-3-05)NN14-15.JPGCsol202 (471-2) 14NN14-15.JPGCsol203-07 (471-3-07)NN14-15.JPG

Type species: C. murrayi.

Synonyms:

  • Acanthosolenia Bernard 1939
  • Anoplosolenia Deflandre 1952
  • Scapholithus Deflandre 1954

NB The monomorphic species C. brasiliensis has often been placed in a separate genus, Anoplosolenia, leaving the dimorphic species C. murrayi in Calciosolenia. Following Young et al. (2003) we prefer to include both species in a single genus, since the coccolith structure of the two species is identical and their affinity is not in dispute. Including the two species in one genus makes this affinity clearer, reduces the number of monospecific genera, and avoids the problem of having generic concepts which cannot be applied to isolated coccoliths in the fossil record. As a result, the artificial genus Scapholithus, which has often been used by palaeontologists for isolated scapholiths, is redundant, all such specimens can be included in Calciosolenia.

Since fossil specimens cannot usually be confidently assigned to either C. murrayi or C. brasiliensis the best identficaton is usually Calciosolenia sp.
